Overview of the Book
This book is not your typical strategy book. A “Pokerism®” is the term I coined to represent a poker quote or comment, often un-attributable, in the same manner
that a witticism is a witty comment. Many things in the modern lexicon have an
underpinning in gambling generally and the game of poker specifically. Each chapter begins with a quote or pokerism, followed by a discussion of how it relates to Texas Hold'em. The
purpose of That’s Poker, Folks is to provide the reader with a look at
the game of Hold’em from the aspect of historical figures, folklore and
professional poker players. The term “That’s Poker” is often
heard throughout casinos, poker rooms and kitchen tables around the world. Uttering it is often the only
way a player can relieve the frustration at the inherent unfairness of the game
and allows them to walk away after a vicious bad beat without committing a
felony.
What better method of learning the intricacies of
Texas Hold’em (and how it relates to life) than through Pokerisms and quotes? Since they
are short and full of wisdom, it is easy to remember their lessons.

LIMIT vs NO LIMIT
|
"Limit poker is a science, but
no-limit is an art. In limit, you are shooting at a target. In no-limit, the
target comes alive and shoots back at you." - Poker Legend Jack Strauss

Though
Fixed Limit and No Limit Poker are forms of Texas Hold’em, they are two very
different games. This is a fact many people fail to understand and which you
can profit. In Limit, the game is more about starting hands and technique,
while No Limit, is about betting, bluffing and the odds you might get if you
hit a huge hand. With the larger bets possible in no limit, you do not see the
raise and re-raise around the table as you do in limit. In limit poker, the
raises move many times around the table, often only stopping when they reach
the cap.
Betting strategies make the games different. Doyle Brunson, calls No Limit “The Cadillac of Poker.”
Most people agree that No Limit is by far the most exciting
form of poker. The only restraint on the amount of a bet is the
depth of your chip stack. You can risk all of your chips on any hand. No
Limit poker rewards (and punishes) aggression much more than limit poker.
Since
the stakes in a single hand are so much higher in No Limit, even at the same
blinds, you need a stronger starting hand to play than in Limit. In No Limit,
you seldom call big bets, unless you are holding a premium hand. In limit, you
can call bets with weaker hands, since the potential amount you can lose on any
hand is less. If you are going to play a hand, it is usually better to raise
rather than call a bet, since you can win with the best hand or win if you have
no callers, whereas with a call you can only win with the best hand. That's Poker, Folks is not yet on sale. To add your name to the waiting list, to be contacted when it is available, please e-mail: info@PokerInsider.org.
