A few years ago, it was difficult to get enough players together for a game in Las Vegas, Los Angeles or Lake Tahoe; it was even illegal to play the game in Atlantic City in the not too distant past. All that has changed at the onset of the new millennium. The last few years have brought a resurrection of the game of Poker, though it is not the same game most people grew up with. Five-Card Draw, the game most of us grew up with on TV westerns has been removed from the World Series of Poker. Seven Card Stud games are still difficult to find and Omaha tables are few and far between, but most poker rooms will open a table for either game if enough players are interested. Most of the top International and Stateside Casinos have added Poker Rooms. The game of choice is normally Texas Hold'em. Even James Bond plays Hold'em now, instead of the formerly glamorous game of Baccarat. Poker has regained and actually surpassed its popularity due to the recent proliferation of televised events such as the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour, as well as the numerous Made for TV Poker events. Poker Rooms come in all shapes and sizes. They can occupy the backroom of a saloon or reside inside larger casinos. They may have one or two tables or over a hundred. Some cater to the blue collar players, some aim for the high stakes players and others offer games of all levels. While most offer ring or cash Limit Hold'em games, the popularity of No Limit Hold'em insures most rooms have at least one No Limit or Spread Limit game. Many have no limit tournaments on a regular basis. |
