POKER GIVES DESIGNATES SEPTEMBER AS "NATIONAL POKER MONTH"
ENLISTS CARDROOMS NATIONWIDE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHARITY
|

Las
Vegas – Card rooms across the nation have the opportunity to celebrate National
Poker Month by hosting one charity tournament during the month of September
to support the non-profit organization Poker
Gives, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by poker
industry leaders Mike Sexton, Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher, and Lisa Tenner. The
funds raised by Poker
Gives will be distributed to four mainstream charities:
Paralyzed Veterans of America, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Special Olympics,
and the Step by Step Foundation.
By designating
September as National Poker Month, Poker
Gives has created an annual venue that will unite the
poker world in supporting important causes and “giving back.” Every card room in
the United States will be asked to select one day during the month of
September, 2010 to host a charity poker tournament. Half of the proceeds from
the event will go to Poker
Gives and half will remain in the prize pool. The buy-in amount
will be chosen by each individual card room, but a minimum buy-in of $50 with
re-buys is recommended.
Poker
Gives
will include a listing of all participating card rooms in press releases, ads,
articles in major poker media, and on the Poker Gives website. There will be a
great deal of media coverage regarding National Poker Month. The names of all
winners and participating card room managers will be entered into separate
drawings to be held in October, 2010. Prizes will be awarded to the drawing winners,
including a seat in the WPT Invitational, Card
Player Cruises vacations, and buy-ins to tournaments. The names of
all card rooms that participate will be entered into a separate drawing, with
one cardroom winning a meet-and-greet session and a poker seminar with Mike
Sexton, Linda Johnson, and Jan Fisher.
Please
contact Michelle "Sassy" Richey, Poker Gives Director of Operations,
via email at sassy@pokergives.org or by phone at (702)
860-7413 with any questions or to register a card room for National Poker Month.

♣ Las Vegas, NV - Poker Gives was founded by poker industry professionals Mike
Sexton, Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher, and Lisa Tenner as a way for the poker world
to "Give Back" to worthwhile charity organizations. The goal is to raise funds
through poker events and donate it to five mainstream charities that are near
and dear to their hearts.
No Board Members or Founding Members will receive a salary
in the expectation that a minimum of 95% of all funds raised will reach the
charities. All efforts will be made to keep the administrative costs of
maintaining the site to 5% or less. The charities Poker Gives supports are: Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Paralyzed Veteran's of America, Special Olympics, Sunflower Children and American Cancer Society.

Dogs in Need at the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter

♣ Baldwin Park, CA - I received the following e-mail from poker star Chad Brown:
|
Baldwin Park Animal Shelter
4275 North Elton, Baldwin ParkCA 91706
Phone: 626-430-2378 or 626-962-3577
As many of you might know the Baldwin Park shelter, like all the county shelters, makes the Los Angeles city shelters look like a 4 Seasons Resort. Due to overcrowding and a horrible location they have an extremely high Euthanasia rate.
Adoption fees are only $37 [for a first time adoption] and the price includes spay/neuter [normally an additional $40].
|
I talked to Lance Hunter, Director of the Shelter for some further insight. If you are not in the Baldwin park area, you can donate to the LA County Animal Shelter System or directly to the LA County Animal Care Foundation and requesting the donation be set aside for the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter, with special programs for medical care and expansion programs. The Foundation provides a donation opportunity for those who wish to assist
Los Angeles County animals in need. Your contribution to the Foundation support
valuable programs: such as adoptions, spay-and-neuter programs, and direct
support to ensure the safety and comfort of shelter animals. Your gift will help
these programs continue through the next year, and help sustain vital lifeline
programs to shelter animals in need. Besides cash donations, leaches, collars and bandanas are always welcome. Lance also said that volunteers are always appreciated at the shelter, in a variety of areas, 7 days a week.
If you are in another part of the country, and want to assist in your own area, contact your local SPCA and ask how you can help.
